Posted by Polly Garter at 2:05 AMApart from that rant (excuse me) the run of the show went well, we had fabulous audiences the entire time with full houses for all but one of the houses. Rehearsals start for the next prouction this week, but luckily enough the said chap is not involved which will save me my sanity.
I have FINALLY got round to clearing two wardrobes over the weekend; go me!!! I have a huge pile of stuff to go onto ebay and another huge pile for the local charity shop. The crimson velvet frock coat has had yet another repreive (I wore it out last Thursday) so that's back in the wardrobe for a while.
On another note, I had the most wonderful late Christmas pressie from my darling friend, and it's a framed original hand tinted print from a German 'fashion' newspaper from 1881. So that's now proudly on the wall in the dressing room. Along with that she gave me a hair pin, probably around 1910-15 which is tortoiseshell and is wonderful for putting in an 'up-do'.
If you see this book around, go read it "Rivers of London" by Ben Aaronovitch, which is a hillarious romp across London.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Rivers-London-Ben-Aaronovitch/dp/0575097582/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1296464839&sr=1-1
They mention a few other authors that write in the same vein so I might look into those.
This is the other book I'm reading is this:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Debs-at-War-Anne-Courcy/dp/0753820781/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1296469436&sr=1-1
These girls were plucked from idle rich society where their only future was marriage to a 'suitable chap' to become, in some cases, integral to the success of winning the war; as they were well educated, many speaking French and German they were used at SOE where their pre-war knowledge of Europe was put to good use as many had been to finishing schools in both France and Germany. Others who's talent in mathematics would have never been used were sent to Bletchley Park and helped the code breakers there. A jolly good yarn from some jolly good old girls.
anway...pip pip for now
take care all

Posted by Polly Garter at 6:59 AMFirstly it's the 'get-in' for the new set; then a tech-run through on Monday before we open on Tuesday. The costumes arrived last night from the costumier....well, what fitted didn't suit and what suited didn't fit!!!
We have used these people before and we make the same complaints all the time; but the Director insists on using this company, leaving the actors miserable over terrible costumes, it puts a pall of disappointment over the entire proceedings. And what makes it worse is that I know that the company has THE most fantastic stuff but because they have SO much stuff they just use the "same old same old" time and time again. I usually visit their unit a week or so before a production and very diva-ish demand to see what they have set out for me, and then if it's not right (which it usually isn't) then I very politely ask to see something else more appropriate. I feel strongly that after all the time I have spent rehearsing and line learning then the least I can expect is a reasonable costume!!!!!
Anyway....as I said there's lots to do, getting bits of personal "bits" together, props etc. And as it's a late Victorian production, then it's great for shawls, broches etc. As this is a huge cast and backstage isn't the biggest in the world, I'm trying to be organised and take as little as possible in the way of personal bits with me. BUT with 5 totally different outfits ALL requiring different footwear it's going to be harder than I thought.
But when all is said and done, tickets are going well and it looks as if we shall have a good run. The trouble with Rep Theatre is that as soon as one play is done, then it's straight into rehearsals for the next one...oh for a nice break (but I know I'd moan terribly if I wasn't doing anything).
I must make some Rocky Road this weekend as I promised it to the chaps in work when it was my Birthday but then there was the snow and I was ill THEN there was Christmas THEN I couldn't be bothered last weekend...so I have PROMISED that I will make it on Sunday.
I've just finished reading "Wait for me" the memoirs of Deborah, Dowager Duchess of Devonshire (Chatsworth in Derbyshire is the family seat) she was the youngest of the famous or infamous Mitford sisters...Unity tried to commit suicide on the day that war was declared as she was right wing and was obsessed with Hitler; on the other side Jessica (known as Decca to the family) was a hard line communist and went to Spain during their Civil war where she lost her husband. Diana married British facist leader Oswald Mosely (leader of the brownshirts) and was incarcertated in Wormwood Scrubs during the war after being "shopped" by her sister the famous author Nancy (who wrote The Pursuit of Love)as being a dangerous subversive. The lives these sisters lived including the other sisters who lived quieter but none the less interesting lives are a window on a world that no longer exists in England and certainly didn't exist for the majority of the population. But for anyone who likes Evelyn Waugh and the decades of the Bright Young Things....these sisters were brighter than most.
If the above ramblings have interested you, then there are another two books that I would recomment:
Letters between Six Sisters - edited by Charlotte Moseley
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Mitfords-Letters-between-Six-Sisters/dp/1841157740/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1295019440&sr=8-1-catcorr
and
The Mitford Girls by Mary Lovell
http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Mitford-Girls/dp/B002TXZSK8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=digital-text&qid=1295019282&sr=1-1
Have a lovely Friday all

Posted by Polly Garter at 1:51 AMI ended up walking more than half the 11 miles home, before my darling Pa dug the car out and ventured out of the house for the first time in three weeks (he's been poorly) and rescued me. I must say that I would not have managed to walk all that way without Craig and Martyn who braved the elements with me. Many, many thanks guys.
Anyhow, since I've posted last I have had another birthday! Although technically I'm not counting anymore. However I had some wonderful presents of people, Ma and Pa bought me far too much to mention it all, but it was all wonderful including a vintage beaded handbag and compact. My Aunt gave me a green glass sugar "scuttle" I think is the only way to describe it. (i will get round to posting some pics soon) as it's difficult to describe it and do it justice. Ma was livid as they had both seen this in a antique shop and my aunt had got there first, Ma retailated with a silver spoon in the same shape. I also had a book on vintage packaging and ephemera which is wonderful to dip into. From my wonderful chum Celia I had two books on the golden age of the Bright Young Things and the DVD of the same, and a wonderful little book in secret London....she spolit me...
So Christmas is nearly upon us, and due to the above mentioned snow, I am so behind with my present shopping. I have a few bits n bobs under the tree for the Ma and Pa but not really very much. I'm hoping to get some shopping done this afternoon, but I'm not that hopeful as Ma has just rung to say it's snowing...again. At least we have plently of food and drink and we are all warm and reasonably healthy...
So May the Christmas Season bring all that you wish for and that you have a happy and healthy 2011.

the room was immense, with a huge wardrobe straight out of Narnia and two (yes two) dressing tables, which prevented much bickering! and then a table and chairs by the ceiling height windows...the whole hotel is what I call 'shabbychic'
to be continued...it's SNOWING

Posted by Polly Garter at 5:11 AMIf anyone lives close to Cardiff and loves antique bitsnbobs then you MUST go to Jacob's Antique market (not far from General Train Station) they have everything there from vintage clothing (ot much but some nice bits) fabulous vintage jewellry and then nearly everything else you can imagine from haberdashery shop fittings, clocks of all shapes and sizes, and mad assortments on some stalls that you could spend hours footling about in.
I did open my purse and bat the moths away and bought a few little trinkets. I promise that I will post pictures of ALL my recent purchases over the weekend....PROMISE....honest....
Anyway, I bought a lovely Victorian silver and marquiste necklace AND a stunning little art deco brooch that splits into two collar cuffs (which I've wanted for ages and have never been able to get my mits on) and which look stunning on a bargain vintage M&S dress that is remarkably similar to the new D&G one that Madonna is wearing in recent ads.
I also got some little bits of silver and china for my darling Ma for Christmas.
I'm deliberately NOT going out shopping this weekend as I'm off to Italy next Saturday and there's all those fab Italian bags, gloves, umbrellas etc for me to splash out on...teehee.
Reading all my favourite blogs about the vintage scene up in London over Halloween, it annoys me that I no longer have a sofa to crash on in London, and unless I cough up for a hotel then it's difficult to get to these events. But hotels bash up the price along with travel, spendsies etc...sigh...but all looked to have a wonderful time so maybe next year???
that she might regret what she's agreed to do next...

Posted by Polly Garter at 3:11 AMIt also means more time out for rehearsals but and I keep going back to it, it's a step in the right direction for me, so I'll suck it up and see what happens. I am chuffed to bits that he rang me and offered me the part based on seeing some of my previous work and a recommendation from a mutual acquaintance. Didn't even ask me to read for him, even though I offered....so one mustn't look a gift-director in the mouth one should grab said opp with both hands and run screaming into the good night.
My long awaited sort out of the wardrobes is finally underway and should see some stuff up on ebay as its far to good just to lob to the charity shops as I usually do. For example there's a crimson velvet frock coat that I bought in a fit of madness which has never quite fit properly but has taken up space for far to long, so that will be going, unless I have a moment of weakness and stick it back in the wardrobe like I usually do!!!
I was debating whether to chop off some of the old hair as it's now reaching my posterior and basically its now a plait or nothing can be done with it, but again Dessie needs long hair so it will have to wait for a while.
I've no new purchases to note for you, although I did bite the proverbial bullet and bought the Kindle and boy am I glad I did. It's brilliant and my dear papa was quite overwhelmed by the speed and ease of loading books onto it. So he might find one in his Christmas Stocking!
anyway ttfn and have a good weekend all....think of me auditioning cast for a film....in a little room...all stuffy and meh!
nothing!!!

Posted by Polly Garter at 3:32 AMOn to other news; I've been offered the part of Ross in the "scottish play" by an "innovative" director:.....but and isn't there ALWAYS a but, it nearly clashes with Othello when I'm playing Desdemona. So what do I do? To be perfectly honest, I have no idea. If I take it then it will be good for me to work with another director and a new audience.
I have a wonderful Aunt, who has bought me the most unusual glass just, obviously late 30s early 40s in pressed glass...bless her heart.
My darling Aged Ps are currently on holidays (again) but they are having a wonderful time cruisung round the Eastern Med. I'd love to go on a cruise, all that dressing up. But Dad has suggested that Mum and I do the Queen Mary 2 to New York...wouldn't that be just bliss??? arriving at NY past the Statue of LIbery on the deck of a huge cruise liner....what a way to travel.
So until next time, I will carry on dreaming a dream!
why all the fuss

Posted by Polly Garter at 5:16 AMJust something for you to ponder. Why are there SO many more cars on the road when school starts again? For 7 weeks in the summer it is total bliss and I can get to work in under half an hour for the measly 12 miles that I commute. However as soon as the little dahlings return it can take up to and hour and 20 minutes. I could get across central London just as quickly. They have recently build a second "by-pass" to ease the traffic but as I live directly between the both of them, they have NO impact whatsoever on the traffic leaving the valley through a narrow bottleneck of a road...joy unbounded.
I was thinking of catching the train again, but the thought of spending another winter next to sniffing/damp/smelly people in trains that are late and overcrowded. I did it for 8 years and I can't face doing it again. As much as i would love to be green (and not look like Kermit) I can't face the dreadful public transport that is about these parts. I would cheerfully give up my car if I lived in London and had all their tranport links, but 1 train every half hour (if they decide to run it) and a bus that goes to every village between here and God knows where and takes over an hour to do a car journey that takes 15 minutes....I rest my case.
On another note entirely. my new little skirt looks wonderful with my red 3/4 sleeved cardigan and black 40s pumps. Such a bargain for £5.
Going on a shopping trip with Mam tomorrow as she's off on hols again, and I should get a nice lunch out of it...if I'm lucky ;D
I promise I will post some pictures in the next few days.... 'onest guv...

Posted by Polly Garter at 3:27 AMI see something I like in a Charity Shop or local dress shop...even ebay. Then I humm and haww for days and then decide that I must have the said item under any circumstances and then fret until I (or I can send my personal shopped aka Mam) to get it for me.
For example:
2 pressed water jugs resulted in a round trip of 15 miles because I previously decided I didn't want them
1 vintage dressing table set - ditto...same shop a week later.
1 50s cocktail set of jug and 6 glasses....fretted until Mam picked them up for me on the Monday after I'd dithered for over an hour on the Saturday.
Luckily enough I managed to bag all the above items...sadly I lost the 6 cake forks and minature cake slice for £3 cos I dithered....£3...thee sodding pounds....I ask you!!!
Anyway...must also stop my perving in the homeware department in John Lewis...it is unhealthy!!!! Hyperventilating over a mixing bowl is wrong....just WRONG!!!!!
But I still want it!!!!
pictures from the show will be posted when i get round to it.
till next time

I'll post some pictures of the show by the end of the week

Posted by Polly Garter at 3:33 AMI used the following Butterick Battern #4827
and they have come out really well, one is in pale gold velvet with a vintage gold chain belt courtesy of my mum, and the other is in a black velvet with pearl trimming. I'll post pics of them later when I have some tidy pictures.
The headdress also worked really well (pic to follow) using a £3 bracelet from Primark which had faceted 'gems' and three strands of pearls again from Primark. The wonderful thing about that shop is that the stuff is so cheap that pulling it apart and making something else is a worthwhile adventure.
Final rehearsal for Shakespeare's Richard II is tonight; it's looking very good and the fight scenes have been interesting as neither lead actor have done any stage fighting before.
I've been pleased with the posters and also with the programme, so I just need to check that for typos etc and then that can be sent to the printers.
On another note, I am glad that I
a) didn't traipse to Vintage at Goodwood after reading some of the reviews about the event
and
b) didn't got to Reading to see Guns'n'Roses for the exact same reason as above.
I saw GnR back in the day when they were mad, bad and dangerous to know, I even saw them at the Marquee in London back in the late 80s before they really hit it big. GnR will never be the same without Duff, Slash, Izzy and or Gilby and Steve...I gave CD a listen and didn't bother again...ditch the name Axl and stop living in the past, arriving on stage an hour late just 'because' is no longer funny, clever or grown up for a man of nearly 50. Give your fans the respect they deserve just like all the other bands that day did...arrive on time and your fans get a whole set, not half a set and then a rant at "authority" for God's sake man, you are no longer an "angry young man"....give it UP!!!!!!!!!!
Anyway, must have a final read through of the lines for tonight and then I can look through the vintage patterns on ebay for a nice 1950s style dress to start on - I already have the most fab material...black cotton with tiny little red roses and white skulls....tres gothique
till later

Posted by Polly Garter at 5:43 AMBut this weekend I MUST do something about my wardrobe(s) maybe if I just think about looking at one of them, then I won't get so daunted by the sheer volume of rubbish to sort through. I mean, I really have SO many clothes that I forget what I have and end up wearing the same 10 or so outfits that I can lay my hands on (usually cos they are lying on a chair); for example last night I was looking for a light jacket/cardi thing to wear out and came across a fab black fitted jacket with a lace back that was my mothers from the early 60s....totally forgotten about, so I wore it and had so many comments about it!
Heads up for some buys...pics of which I will post later...
some fab rose jewellry currently in Primark and George at Asda and Matalan....Matalan also has some wonderful retro cardigans with 3/4 sleeves for £6 in vivids and pastels...I got me a baby pink one and one in emerald green.
Also i picked up the most fab lemonade/cocktail jug and glasses at a local charity shop for the grand total of £4....I'll post a pic of that later too.
love and kisses till I'm back

Posted by Polly Garter at 4:48 AMSo, after reading some wonderful blogs on vintage fashion etc, I dug out all my old vintage (some real vintage some merely good repro) from the back of the wardrobe and have been gracing the office with chic black pencil skirts with little black nip waisted blouses and wide leg trousers with natty little short sleeved cardigans. I do stand out as most people here wear jeans, but i don't like them as a with an hour glass figure i look out of proportion in them. I've also dusted down the old sewing machine and this weekend am going to attempt a 1950s style halterneck dress with THE most fab fabric that i found for £1.50 a metre (black with red sort of poppy-ish flowers on it) so i will report back on that.
I'm also Twittering again (is that a verb? I suppose it must be these days) although my posts there are even more random than these mindless outpourings.
Anyhow....lunch is over so must head on back to that chain gang (i'm the one with the cattle prod haha)

Posted by Polly Garter at 2:37 PMSince I last graced this hallowed portal, I've been on holiday in Italy and then been ill since. A boring old recurring thing-y that has reared its ugly head so life has been a tad...slow at the moment.
Well a minor point was that I finally played by dream part of Nancy in Oliver Twist, collecting a grand total of 29 bruises by the end of the week!!!! the most spectacular one was on my ribs which was the result of landing on Bill Sikes' boot...still a good week all in all.
No shoe purchases lately, BUT I did buy two most georgous suede handbags in Como, Italy...one in scarlett and the other in pale green...wicked.
So, what has happened since...three words sum it up really..."not a lot"...*snigger*
I promise that I'll update more often (ok Ro?) but I'm tired now and I can't think of anything else to say...
Apart from the fact that Bill Sikes rules...
the sun has got his hat on...

Posted by Polly Garter at 2:28 AMIce on the car again this morning BUT i did manage to find an ice scraper thing-y so I spared the credit card this morning. But it's still a bit chilly standing there like a lemon while you remove the ice from the car...but at least i had Slash, Axl and co to keep me company although I'm not sure that Ma and the neighbours appreciated Paradise City at just after 8am...but who cares. If I'm up then everyone else should be.
ok...shoes of the day...actually boots of the day: high heeled fabric boots. Black of course. Do i own anything that's not black? ummm....that would be a no.
Reading a really crap book called Left Bank by some newspaper columist who writes a brilliant column (which I religiously read every week) but maybe she should stick to columns and not novels...
Need to temp the muse to carry on with the new short story...the Mad Lep is hounding me for more...
Working in the bar tonight...bah!
